Last year was the 10th year for Michael Sottosanti brought his engaging primitive technology program-Earth Skills-to the Shenandoah Valley. Michael has lived his life demonstrating his love and respect for the natural world and its wonders. His passion for and wisdom in flintknapping, outdoor survival skills, hide tanning, basket making, and bow and arrow construction equals his love for sharing his knowledge with others. Weekly Camps - Earth Skills expands the way it delivers weekly camps that area youth have loved for so many years. In its new form, it is the campers who decide what direction the camp takes. We'll start each week by asking what the campers would like to focus on. This allows people who want to take the same camp(s) again to continue learning in the areas they are most interested. The main goal in Earth Skills is for the campers to enjoy themselves, and the knowledge of the staff makes it possible for campers to take their survival education as far as they would like to. Each camp centers on learning about primitive skills, and within that context, campers will proudly take home their handmade creations. Among the many types of activities that are offered, highlights include:
We're sure that our return campers and new friends alike will take home lessons learned and new perspectives about looking at the modern day world! * In our continuing commitment to serve the needs of both parents and children, we will now offer the option of longer days for those parents who need the extra time. The extended day-for those who choose it-will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. And don't forget! Campers must wear appropriate clothing, shoes (no opened toed shoes), bring a non-perishable lunch which does not require preparation, snacks, drinks, water bottles, and sun block. | I learned how to make a fire, shoot a bow & arrow, and cook venison. I really enjoyed the neat plants and making tools. I will always remember kayaking & canoeing. I also liked waking up in the morning & seeing the fog on the river. I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful time. ~ 6th grader, Powhatan School |

Participants will learn about friction fires, bark baskets, stone tools and making pottery. They will be quite pleased with themselves when they actually create a piece of pottery, an arrowhead, or a bark basket to take home. They will practice archery (with bows made by the instructor), and fishing and tracking. |
